Open or closed is not a preference, it is a spec decision. Here is how the WatchGuard Foam systems map to the work.
Get Foam PricingEvery foam job starts with the same fork in the road. Closed cell brings R-6.5 to R-7 per inch, structural rigidity and a built-in vapor retarder at two inches, at two-pound density and a higher chemical cost per R. Open cell brings roughly R-3.7 per inch at half-pound density, superior sound damping and the best cost per R where cavity depth is generous. WatchGuard Foam supplies both, and more importantly publishes yield and processing numbers you can hold us to: set temperatures, pressure ranges and board-foot yields measured on working rigs, not laboratory optimism.
Below is how our contractor customers deploy each system across the building types we supply most.
Residential and light commercial envelope work is the volume application. Closed cell dominates rim joists, crawl spaces and coastal or flood-zone walls where moisture control drives the spec. Open cell wins vented-attic underside, interior partition sound work and deep 2x6 wall cavities on budget builds. Mixed-system houses, closed cell below grade and open cell above, are increasingly the standard bid, and ordering both from one supplier keeps the trailer simple.
Metal buildings are closed cell country: the foam glues the skin to the frame, kills condensation drip at the source and adds racking strength barns were never engineered with. Two inches on the walls and roof deck transforms a sweating machine shed into conditioned storage. Livestock and produce facilities add washdown-tolerant coatings over the foam, and potato and produce barns in particular have been a WatchGuard proving ground for years.
At the specialty end, closed cell earns its density premium. Coolers and freezer additions insulate and vapor-seal in one pass. Tanks and process vessels take foam for both thermal control and condensation management. And foam-over-roof-deck work, closed cell sprayed directly to a prepared low-slope roof and coated for UV, remains one of the highest-performing roof assemblies available, pairing naturally with coatings from our sibling roof line.
Whatever the application, the ordering conversation is the same: tell us the substrate, the climate zone and the spec R-value, and we will confirm the system, the sets and the processing window before anything ships. Contractors switching from another supplier get a straight cross-reference, not a sales pitch.
Board footage, climate zone, substrate. We confirm system choice and quote sets with honest yield math.
